SCCU Champions: Adult

The first clearly identified SCCU Championship tournament was held at Salisbury (then, of course, in the Southern Counties) in September 1898.

There was, however, an SCCU tournament in 1896 at Clifton, Bristol, and a second in 1897 at Southampton, both won by HE Atkins and seem to have been for the Union (Amateur) Championship in all but name.

They were preceded, in August 1895, by an Amateur tournament at Hastings alongside the International. But this event was held jointly by SCCU and British Chess Association, which unlike the later events, was not restricted to SCCU players.

After the 1898 event we have no information until 1937. We have Ladies Champions only for 1959-63, but suspect there will have been others.

The SCCU Champion is presented with the Glenroy Cup, which is held for one year.

In addition, the Champion is awarded a place in the British Championships. Should they have already qualified, the British Championship place is awarded to the next highest scoring eligible player.
