WHO WAS WHO?

SCCU Officers over the years. Most Offices are there, but not all. You won't find Deputy President or Auditor, which belonged in Table 1 but wouldn't fit. We've also omitted the occasional short-lived job. There was briefly in the thirties an Assistant Secretary, and in the sixties an Assistant Bulletin Editor. There was an Office of SCCU Registrar from 1961 to 1971, held for most of that time by Miss Titcomb who largely overlaps as Minute Secretary. There was also briefly thereafter an SCCU Archivist.
     Table 1 is complete. Outside Table 1, the only lists known to be complete are Bulletin Editor, London CMC, Grading Programmer and Webmaster. A number of other jobs, like County Match Controller, are obviously older than the lists suggest. In fact, County Match Controller was for very many years a part of the Secretary's job. For more than half a century the only named Offices, as far as we can tell from the records, were those in Table 1 (plus Deputy President and Auditor). There was an elected Committee, but it is often less than clear which people did what.
     Ideally this page is a record of who did it, not just who held Office. Given more research, it is likely that several of the lists could be extended upwards. This has been done, in the one case (Bulletin Editor) where it was easy.
     On odd occasions, where the person elected to an Office is known not to have actually done the job, we have substituted the name of the person who did.

Note. The chief executive's title, in the original 1892 Constitution, is Chairman. By 1930 at latest it was President. Engraving (1924/5) on the Montague Jones trophy describes its donor as "Chairman 1915-1920".

¹ We were long in doubt about the spelling of Major Montague Jones's name. It often has a hyphen in the SCCU records, though not on the trophy which bears his name. We had not seen it written in his own hand; the minute books which would have borne his signature are lost. But John Allain, President of the British Correspondence CA, tells us 16.6.06 that it appears many times in the BCCA minute books. Always without a hyphen.
