PETER HANNAN 1931 - 2012
It is with great regret we have to report the sad news of the passing aged 81 of Peter Hannan on 10th April 2012.
Peter had been involved in many aspects of Kent chess, as player, arbiter, organiser and junior coach over many years. He was the chief controller at the Charlton congress during the period 1973 - 1989, as well as being an arbiter at many other events over the years including the Islington Congress.
He was a member of Charlton chess club for more than 60 years, acting as a match captain and chairman of the club on a number of occasions. Peter was also active as a committee member for the Kent County Chess Association and held the office of chairman for several years whilst his last official role was as a junior coach at Eltham College. For some years his three sons, John, Simon and Julian also competed in club and tournament chess.
Together with his wife, Rose-Marie, Peter held an 'open' house at Sidcup hosting a number of visiting players, some of whom stayed for just a night, whilst others stayed for months or even years. These various visitors included Murray Chandler, David Bronstein, Victor Korchnoi, Nigel Davies, Gyozo Forintos, Shaun Taulbut, Jon Speelman, Max Fuller, Leon Piasetski, David Friedgood, Darryl Johansen, Rob Hartoch, Eric Schiller and Robert Bellin.
Peter remained a strong club player throughout his life. He played for club and county until last season, and in his 81st year was participating with success, as well as enjoying the camaraderie, in the Exmouth Seniors, the Paignton Congress and the Gibraltar tournaments.
Peter is survived by Rose-Marie and his sons and grandchildren. We send our sincere condolences to them all. The funeral will be held at 10.00 am on Tuesday 24th April at the Falconwood/Eltham crematorium, Crown Woods Way, Eltham SE9 2AZ

This is an extended version of a notice which has appeared on the ECF website.
