Rate of play: 30 minutes per player per game

The event, planned as a four-round team Swiss, was played instead as a four-round jamboree to accommodate the awkward entry of five teams. Boards 1-2 were paired together, as were 3-4 and so on. The boards labelled "1" in the results below should be read as "1-2"; and so on.

HANDICAP COMPETITION

The teams' handicap scores were based on grading: what they scored, minus what they "ought" to have. Given the nature of the event, the handicap scores were rather laboriously worked out game by game, then added up. Hence the unexpectedly precise answers.
To put it informally, the very strong Essex A team performed even better than their grades and scored a plus on handicap. They wouldn't actually have been allowed to win the Handicap as well as the Championship. But Surrey as it happened, the lowest-graded team, outdid them by performing more than 10 points above themselves.

The Championship Trophy was presented to Essex. The Handicap Trophy was not available. For all we know it hasn't been seen since the 2002 winners failed to return it in 2003.
