MAGDALEN COLLEGE SCHOOL OXFORD
BRITISH CHESS EDUCATIONAL TRUST AWARD 2002
MCS Oxford have gained the rare distinction of winning this award twice (the first occasion was in 1964). Under their teacher John Place they are one of the leading chess-playing schools in the County, being active at all age levels down to 7 or 8, competing with success in tournaments outside the Union, and regularly winning their Zone of the BCF Schools Championship. (This year their A and C teams took the first two places and both go on to the national stage.) They have also lately been providing the venue for Oxfordshire's home County matches.
We believe one other award was made, to a school from the NCCU, but have no details.
[Apologies for late announcement. The award was made, and prize Board and Clock delivered, some time ago but we've been waiting for an announcement from the BCET/BCF. In the absence of one we are now pleased to announce it anyway.]

CCF CHESS CHALLENGE 2002 21st September 2002
"The Grand Final was held at CCF with the 12 winners from the different age-group finals held in May coming together to battle over the £225 prize fund. Players involved in the event from the start ranged from Staffordshire down to Dorset, showing that the CCF Chess Challenge is becoming of significant national interest.
"There were 4 rounds of 50 minutes each on the clock and in those 4 rounds, not one of the gameswas drawn.
"The players ranged from U15 down to U7 (as of their last school year). The first shock came in round 1 when the youngest boy champion defeated the oldest. Craig Whitfield from Staffordshire put in a fantastic performance all day to show what a tremendous prospect he is. His mother said she would have been delighted for him to score 50%, but he outdid himself. Ultimately, he finished second, only losing to the eventual winner."
1 Similan Anandajeyarajah (U13B: Tiffin School) 4/4 £50; 2-4 Sheila Dines (U9G: "Old Palace": Best Girl) £42, Jonathan Lui (U11B: Whitgift: Best U11 £42; Craig Whitfield (U9B: Hassell Coun Prep Staffs: Best u9) £42; 5-8 Thilagini Anandajeyarajah ("Knollmead Primary"), Georgia Blake-Mills ("Westwood High"), Visagan Ravindran (Tiffin School), Alex Troop (Wilsons) 2
