BCF NATIONAL SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP
2001-2002

NATIONAL FINALS
at the Nottingham Moat House, Saturday 22nd June 2002

The season is completed. The National Champions are Hampton School, who won the Plate last year; and the new Plate Champions are Bluecoat Oldham who had never even played in the competition before. Hampton took home a silver trophy going back nearly fifty years and secured a cheque for £500 as first prize. Bluecoat took a more modest clock prize (plus trophy) and have every right to be pleased with their first year in the competition.
     The detailed results are below.

By long tradition the last four teams in the Championship meet at a prestigious central venue to contest the semi-finals and Final, with a play-off match for third place. This year, for the first time, the event was expanded to include the last four in the Plate Championship. For the first time but not the last, because it added hugely to the atmosphere and brought in some very strong teams.
So 48 juniors, plus reserves and teachers and assorted coaches and parents, converged on Nottingham on Friday evening, some of them (the players anyway) having sat A Level exams that afternoon. No one said this wasn't a tough event. They left on Sunday morning after an extremely full Saturday comprising two four-hour games of chess, a Presentation Dinner afterwards, and, in one team's case, a late-night cinema outing to Spiderman after that.

Dave Welch, BCF Chief Arbiter, officiated in his inimitably firm but friendly style, and there weren't any disputes. Peter Turner, BCF Junior Director, was a tower of strength. The BCF's President and CEO both attended the Prizegiving Dinner, as did Cynthia Gurney who holds the BCF together from the Office at Battle. Various BCF Directors popped in from time to time, seeking refuge no doubt from the Management Board meeting that was going on at the same time in a distant part of the hotel.

The older team has to win by a points margin at least equal to the age difference in years, taking the difference as a whole number (by truncation if necessary).
