Kent were missing their top two from the semi-final. Three Essex players (plus one from the U175) broke down on the M1 and took a taxi to Leicester from Newport Pagnall. The Essex Treasurer's reaction is not recorded. |

1 Bd 6. Alleged by players on both sides to be called Chris, around 200 strength. There is a Chris Shepherd (not Shephard) *192 listed as coming from Sheffield near Warwicks. Well, from down here it's near Warwicks. Just thought you'd like to know. Kevin Thurlow Kevin.Thurlow@lgc.co.uk adds 8.7.02: "There is a Chris Shephard in Warwicks (I believe) - I played him in 4NCL when he played for Warwicks Select. And he's a monstrously good postal player (2525!)."Kent mc: "The bare result of this match does not tell the story of this unusual day. To begin with, the nightmare scenario of England qualifying in second place from the Group of Death (so clashing with the Semi-Final that was heavily discussed on the SCCU Website Open Forum) actually happened. Warwickshire put in a request to delay the start of the semi-final till the end of normal time in the England-Denmark match. However when I asked if there would be a further delay if it went to the Golden Goal and penalties I was informed that any further delay would mean our match finishing too late. Therefore I had to ring up my contact, Paul Habershon, at Bedford Modern School who magnificently came to the rescue and arranged a TV for us so that if extra time had to be played the players could at least nip in and out between moves..." |

Essex won on board count. (Well, it was a very convincing win on board count. Its symmetry was something else. That must be very rare.) |

"The unusual board order of the Herts team is explained by the fact that half of them (incl. the captain) were delayed by up to 90 minutes by an accident which closed the M40 near Oxford; those that had arrived at the venue by other routes agreed to start the match on the top boards using the equipment provided by Glos; the delayed players then occupied the remaining boards when they & the Herts equipment arrived." |
