Board 13 needs some explanation. Kent mc: "The Surrey captain's representative sent the maps for the wrong venue, advising that it would be played at the Sutton Adult Education Centre in Benhill Avenue. ALL of the Kent team arrived there on time to find it empty. On contacting the Surrey captain we learned of this error and went to the correct venue - the Coulsdon Christian Fellowship. But, because he had arranged for his wife to come and meet him mid-way through the afternoon our board 13, Barry Beavis, could not come with us to a different venue. We therefore agreed that he should not be defaulted but that this game should be classified as a draw." And that was how we first recorded it, with "(def)" on both sides and a match score of 10½-5½. The Controller disagrees with both captains, and rules game void and 10-5. (Not that it makes a scrap of difference, but if it did your Webmaster's proposed score would be a different one again.) The Kent mc has just put a suggestion about maps in Open Forum. He continues: "Very well done to the Surrey captain, Adrian Waldock, on turning the Surrey team into a formidable force over the two years - this match felt as though we were playing against Essex!" Middx, the tail-enders, had ideas of their own: |

1 Bd 3. Zoe Ryle, Middx mc, confirms that this is the correct spelling. The grading list has Falzarno, and it's wrong. Zoe says: "Can I please thank all the opposing Captains for their help, advice and support during this last season. I found it very hard work forming a team. The attitudes of all the Captains made the task that much pleasanter. "Middlesex U 175 now believes that it has the potential for causing waves during the next season. Let's hope it is fun." |

The things they find to argue about. In the last game to finish (which won't have been crucial, but had attracted spectators anyway), the player to move was able to promote a pawn. About to do so he said, "I'll have a queen." Then, noticing that it allowed mate in one: "Ah. Well, I haven't touched it yet" (he hadn't), and played a rook check. By one account, the argument ended only with the visit. If so they've resolved it since. The match captains agree about all the results. |
