SURREY CLASSIC at Ewell, 1-2 June 2002
attracted 42 players.
Open 1 Paul Roberts (Edinburgh) 11/15 (+3=2) £200; 2-3 IM Graeme Buckley, Paul Georghiou 10 (+3=1-1) £75...
Major 1-2 John Lewin (Orpington), Tim Seymour (Sunbury) 12/15 (+4-1) £75...
Minor 1-2 Harvey Murray-Smith (Hinchley Wood), Daniel Eichner (East Grinstead) 13/15 (+4=1) £70; 3-5 Jemima McGraw (Godstone), William Philpott (East Dulwich, London), Robert Moore (Addlestone) 12 (+4-1)...
"A small but perfectly formed tournament, the first run according to the 3-1 system. Three points – win; 1 point – draw. This removes the incentive to agree draws early, or to arrange them before play starts. In the last round of the open, Paul Roberts was leading with 8 points (+2=2), but just behind on 7 points were Graeme Buckley and Paul Georghiou. So a quick last round draw, far from guaranteeing him at least a share of first prize, could have enabled both his rivals to leapfrog him. If such a system was in place, it would have avoided the fiasco of last year's British Championship when the winner, Joe Gallagher, agreed a draw in the last round with Keith Arkell, after five nail biting, tense, angst ridden moves which had the spectators, if not the entire British chess community, gripping the edges of their seats, scarcely able to contain their excitement."
This tournament was part of the Terence Chapman Grand Prix.

BCF COUNTIES RAPIDPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP at Stevenage, 30th September 2001
Four rounds, nine teams of 12.
1 Yorks 30/48; 2 Herts I 28½; 3 Warwicks 26½; 4-5 Essex, Oxon 25½; 6-7 Norfolk, Herts II 24½; 8 Bucks 21½; 9 Herts Juniors 9½
Handicap 1 Norfolk 30; 2 Herts Juniors 28½; 3 Essex 25; 4 Warwicks 24; 5 Yorks 23½; 6-7 Bucks, Oxon 22½; 8 Herts II 22; 9 Herts I 19
Top scorers Kevin Thurlow (Yorks, by birth), Russell White (Essex)
4/4
So Yorks retain their title. Maybe it's a bit unkind to give the Handicap scores all the way down, but it's fair. Actually the Handicap scores look funny. They ought to have averaged nought, on the system as published. Presumably they added 24/48.
