Under 135      Rules
updated 19.4.02
SCCU JAMBOREES 2001-2
Sunday 14th April 2002
at County Hall, Hertford

Two firsts this year. An U135 event to go with the U180, and a Non-County Member playing. The North Circular League is not the first NCM to play in an SCCU competition, but it's the first in this one.
     You will find question marks with some of the names and grades. All we got was one initial per player, except for the case where there were two and the case where there weren't any, and we didn't get any grades at all. We've looked the grades up, but inevitably we weren't always sure who people were. Let us know if you can fill gaps or correct wrong guesses. [Later: one or two people have. Another has corrected an error we could not have suspected. Only two queries remain, though there may still be wrong guesses.]
     Below the results you'll find the Rules. They are not in the separate Rules Section because they were ad hoc rules for this particular event and are not yet part of the canon.

RULES FOR U180/U135 JAMBOREES TO BE HELD ON 14 APRIL 2002

  1. The events shall be open to all Member organisations of the Union. An organisation may enter any number of teams.
  2. Teams will consist of ten players in the U180 and six in the U135. The qualification to represent a Member County shall be based upon birth or residence in the County, or membership of a chess club in or affiliated to the County, or attendance at an educational establishment in the County, as specified in the BCF Rules currently in force for the Counties Championship. The qualification to represent a Non-County Member shall be the same, except that the word "County" shall be construed to mean the area in which the member is normally active. Doubtful cases shall be referred to the County Match Controller or, in his absence, to the President or Deputy President of the Southern Counties Chess Union prior to the event.
  3. In the U180 all players must have a BCF grade or equivalent rating for chess other than rapidplay in a national 'over the board' grading list published for the start of the season under 180 and at least seven must have such a grade under 170.
         In the U135 all players must have such a grade under 135.
  4. The penalty for any infringement of Rules 2 or 3 shall be the loss of the ineligible player's game and the deduction of a further penalty point from the team's score.
  5. Players shall be arranged as far as possible in their known order of playing strengths.
  6. Hutton jamboree pairings shall be used. Prior to the start of play, captains will draw lots in order to determine the team code letters.
  7. The rate of play will be 35 moves in 1¾ hours and then 30 minutes extra for each player for the remainder of the game.
  8. The clock of the players having the move will be started at the time fixed for the commencement of play. If a player is absent at the end of the first hour, the game will be lost unless a substitute is put in before the time of forfeit.
  9. A win shall count as 1 point and a draw as ½ point. The winning team will be that team which scores most points. Any ties will be resolved as follows:
         (a) most wins;
         (b) board count, obtained by adding the sum of the numbers of the boards won to half the sum of the numbers of the boards drawn - the lower or lowest total wins;
         (c) board elimination, from the bottom upwards.
  10. The captain of the winning U180 team will receive the CMC trophy, and the captain of the winning U135 team will receive a new trophy donated by former SCCU President John Philpott.
